Tundra Terror II

Tundra Terror II is in the books.  We got lucky with the weather again.  We had wonderful weather all week long leading up to the event.  Knowing howWisconsin weather goes, I know it can’t last forever.  But it did.  High around 60 with winds out of the northwest around 10 mph, you can’t ask for a more perfect day in mid October up in the Tundra.

The winds did keep blowing us in close to the lines.  We did have a couple Safety Line violations when pilots tried looping back around and normally it would be combat engagement line warning, but the wind pushed them too far.  We did have one plane fly over the pilot line after a mid-air. He got enough control to head back out across the combat engagement line, only to go crashing into the ground.

We had 11 pilots at the start of the day and one frequency conflict so we flew 2 heats.  After 4 rounds, we lost Dick Albers due to his great ability to wreck airplanes.  After round 6, we lost Terry Van Laanen.  Working 15 hours and then prepping planes for the meet Saturday night finally got to him.  After round number 9, we lost Bryan Hesse due to attrition as well.

The last heat of the day involved 4 of the top pilots: Will Drumm, Bill Geipel, Andy Runte and Bob Loescher.  As expected, there were plenty of quick cuts.  Will scored the first cut with-in seconds of start combat.  Bill and Bob also scored 2 quick cuts before colliding with each other a minute or so in.  That left Andy and Will to duke it out amongst themselves.  Andy ended up with 2 for the round and Will managed to take 3 more chunks from Andy by the time it was all said and done.

Big thanks go out to all of the volunteers that helped out with judging!!!  It sure makes it easier when pilots can work on their planes.  Thanks to Larry, Greg and John for handling the cooking!!!  There were plenty of compliments for the chefs!!!

After 10 rounds here are the results:

  1. Will Drumm               4952
  2. Andy Runte               3172
  3. Bill Geipel                  3076
  4. Mike LaPacz             2320
  5. Jerry Vernig               2260
  6. Rob Wink                 2060
  7. Leon Olszewski         1980
  8. Bob Loescher            1828
  9. Bryan Hesse              724
  10. Terry Van Laanen      518 (Got his first CUT ever in his first ROUND ever)
  11. Dick Albers               492

East Town Mall show is a flying success!
Members exhibited about fifty flyable models and provided daily demonstrations on building kit models and assembling ARF (Almost Ready to Fly) aircraft. Videos of model aviation and Club events were shown constantly throughout both days. Members provided three Flight Simulators which gave the public an opportunity to experience RC Flight first hand. Several members demonstrated their skill by actually flying helicopters in a controlled space in the mall. The public was invited to vote for their favorite display model. Paul Meyers took first place for his beautiful model of a WWII B-25 bomber. Paul Due took second with his traditional Cub on floats (with Bart Simpson at the sticks). Al Majewski won third place with his just completed model of an F-4 Phantom II jet.
Information and literature were available for the Green Bay Model Airplane Club and the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). The show was well received by the mall patrons and we want to thank the management of East Town Mall and Ryan Leanna from Token Traders for enabling us to showcase our hobby to the general public.
Thanks to all the members who brought models to display and spent time answering questions, instructing on the simulators and providing the man-power needed to set-up this show. Thanks to you we achieved our goal of providing information to the public and generating interest in the sport hobby of RC Modeling.

Frozen Fingers Finally Thaw Out!
(Check out all the action in the photos section!)
The Green Bay Model Airplane Club’s annual Frozen Finger Fly and Chili Cook-off was finally rewarded with some decent winter weather. After years of extreme cold and fierce winds, Mother Nature cooperated with calm winds and temperatures in the mid thirties for today’s event. Club members rejoiced and showed up in great numbers to fly in the balmy Wisconsin weather.
Twenty-five to thirty pilots flew everything from 3-D to foamies, and Cubs to helicopters. Most were equipped with skis, but a few made it over the somewhat crusty snow with wheels. There were even a few water planes, but hey, snow is just frozen water, right? And the only casualty to report is one knuckle getting a little too close to the prop. (Craig’s been there before!)
And there were another thirty or so members and guests who showed up just to watch and eat. We had nine entries in the Chili Cook-off, and multiple desserts, beverages and other assorted snacks. If anyone went away hungry, it was their own fault. There was plenty to eat!
After the blind ballots were counted, the favorite Chili was submitted by Dave Flick. Scott Raduenz’ recipe came in second and Bob Mongin’s entry finished third. Thanks to all the members who brought chili and or desserts. It was a good event and a fun day.
Thanks to Mike and Denise for putting this year’s Frozen Finger Fly together. You picked a great day!
All Members,

Due to the rain we had this weekend and the possibility of more rain this week, the Club Officers have decided to postpone the Corn Roast event until further notice.

The prospect of damaging the field (and our relationship with Nicolet) overshadows the benefits of continuing with the event.  Right now the ground will not support the vehicle traffic needed to set up and operate the event, much less the parking and foot traffic of our patrons.  Should conditions improve, we still have three or four weeks to re-schedule and have a 2010 Corn Roast and Air Show.

Thanks to everyone who worked so hard this past weekend to put out the signs.  But now we have to ask you to pull the signs you put out and bring them back to the field.  This is not the way we wanted this event to un-fold, but you just can't do anything about the weather.

Our investment in this event to date has been minimal and if we can hold the Corn Roast in September, we will still use most of what we bought already.

Thanks,
I will keep you informed.
